“Indeed, this article, which is the 1st Step of the 2nd Station of magnificent 7th Ray, the Treatise of Supreme Sign (Âyet-ül Kübra), was written as a trial for an explanatory text for whole of the Treatise (Risale-i Nur). An indeed, we were planning to give a place to The Treatise of Supreme Sign within the heading of The Faith in Allah. However, the explanatory texts for Treatise of Nature have developed and extended much more than we had never expected. And It has become self-sufficient as it has been nourished by select parts proving the unity in finest ways, hence leaving no need to give place to another Treatise.”

The Supreme Sign
The Observations of a Traveller Questioning the Universe Concerning His Maker
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate.
The seven heavens and the earth and all that is in them extol and glorify Him, and there is nothing but glorifies Him with praise, but you understand not their glorifying; indeed, He is Most Forebearing, Most Forgiving.
 Qur’an, 17:44.
[This Second Station, in addition to explaining the above sublime verse, sets out the proofs, arguments, and meaning of the First Station, which has been skipped.]
Since this sublime verse, like many other Qur’anic verses, mentions first the heavens —that brilliant page proclaiming God’s unity, gazed on at all times and by all men with wonder and joy— in its pronouncement of the Creator of this cosmos, let us too begin with a mention of the heavens.
Indeed, every voyager who comes to the hospice and the realm of this world, opens his eyes and wonders who is the master of this fine hospice, which resembles a most generous banquet, a most ingenious exhibition, a most impressive camp and training ground, a most amazing and wondrous place of recreation, a most profound and wise place of instruction. He asks himself too who is the author of this great book, and who is the monarch of this lofty realm. There first presents itself to him the beautiful face of the heavens, inscribed with the gilt lettering of the stars. That face calls him saying, “Look at me, and I shall guide you to what you seek.”
He looks then and sees a manifestation of dominicality performing various tasks in the heavens: it holds aloft in the heavens, without any supporting pillar, hundreds of thousands of heavenly bodies, some of which are a thousand times heavier than the earth and revolve seventy times faster than a cannon-ball; it causes them to move in harmony and swiftly without colliding with each other; it causes innumerable lamps to burn constantly, without the use of any oil; it disposes of these great masses without any disturbance or disorder; it sets sun and moon to work at their respective tasks, without those great bodies ever rebelling; it administers within infinite space —the magnitude of which cannot be measured in figures should they stretch from pole to pole— all that exists, at the same time, with the same strength, in the same fashion, manner and mould, without the least deficiency; it reduces to submissive obedience to its law all the aggressive powers inherent in those bodies; it cleanses and lustrates the face of the heavens, removing all the sweepings and refuse of that vast assembly; it causes those bodies to manoeuvre like a disciplined army; and then, making the earth revolve, it shows the heavens each night and each year in a different form, like a cinema screen displaying true and imaginative scenes to the audience of creation.
There is within this dominical activity a truth consisting of subjugation, administration, revolution, ordering, cleansing, and employment. This truth, with its grandeur and comprehensiveness, bears witness to the necessary existence and unity of the Creator of the Heavens and testifies to that Existence being more manifest than that of the heavens. Hence it was said in the First Degree of the First Station:
There is no god but God, the Necessary Being, to Whose Necessary Existence in Unity the heavens and all they contain testify, through the testimony of the sublimity of the comprehensiveness of the truth of subjugation, administration, revolution, ordering, cleansing, and employment, a truth vast and perfect, and to be observed.
Âyet-ül Kübra: this phrase, which can be expressed as “Supreme Sign” is the name given to the work. The purpose of this work, which is successfully achieved so far, is to interpret the real meaning and the highest truth of above-mentioned verse and verses similar to that verse, which inform us that everything is recalling (Zikir) the names of Allah. “Zikir”, means, as defined in dictionary, “to remember, recall, bear in mind”. What is meant with “recalling of Allah’s names” (zikir) as stated in the verse, is that “everything informs us about the existence of Allah, and becomes an evidence to His existence, acting in his name, under his order and worships him, if not consciously then with its existence. And It does so only with missions, showing and indicating Him (His existence), which are carried out only with the knowledge, power and wisdom of Allah, otherwise it would be overwhelmed and could not carry out any of them. The universe is compared to a book in terms of its order and the meanings it implies.
In a panel discussion, world-renowned professor of physics Max Tegmark draws attention to the mathematical orders existing in the universe and states the following:
“Even Galileo cried out that the universe was a grand book written in the language of mathematics. Because, the astronomical orders that were discovered had astonished him.” In his article, written for the journal of “New Statesman”, Professor of Mathematics Marcus du Sautoy from Oxford University says that “Scientists at CERN certainly share the same views with Galileo. That is, the Universe is a Grand Book written in the language of mathematics.” Each verse of Quran talks about Allah, introducing Him and making Him known, as being an evidence for His Existence. As a matter of fact, the word “Ayet” (Verse) means “clear evidence”.
Hence, this universe is like a “voluminous” Quran and each of its lines and pages are like materialized “Verses”. Each created being is evidence, a “Verse” describing the Person (Zat) who has written the “Book of the Universe” and informing us about Him.
It is also possible to ascribe such a meaning to the naming of this work as “Âyet-ül Kübra”: this work interprets “the materialized” verses of the Universe, which is indeed considered as “Grand Quran”!
When we look at ourselves and to the world, which seems ordinary in our monotonous lives, where we live without asking questions isn’t this exactly what we see: an alien sent to this planet without his, her knowledge and consent.
Isn’t this the reality? Right after we leave our mother’s womb, we do find ourselves in a strange place faced with creatures we have not known before. Wouldn’t the first questions, that should be asked by someone, who was taken to an island blindfold and left alone there in an unconscious condition, be “Where am I? How did I come here? Who has sent me here, Why?
When we look at the world, to which we were sent exactly in the same manner, with an effort to understand it, we will see that:
*This place is a guesthouse into which we were suddenly thrown but where we will stay for a limited time and it is understood that way. We are not here accidentally. Because we are being hosted generously.
It is like an exhibition place which is so beautiful and magnificent as to make one think that it is founded for making people watch it and be amazed; that it is worked specially on the arts shown over it; and that it is deliberately beautified in a way so as not to leave any space for coincidence.
* Millions of living beings both in number and type, like the members of an army, function orderly although they are crowded. Although there are so many different species and individuals, each one and each type has tasks that serve the interests of all. They all have special weapons to protect themselves. Each one wears special dresses formed in accordance with their living conditions.
However, they do not seem to have the necessary capabilities to develop these on their own and to maintain their regular functioning.
* The word “Ecosystem”is used to name an orderly and regular process which is adjusted with super precise measurements, pushing the limits of the logic. This term implies that “everything, living and non-living, are in a continuous interaction with each other, they do not act autonomously and independently from each other and it is a mistake to think this way.”
* The indication of the fact that nothing acts accidentally is that although there is no consciousness involved, all the services that normally require conscious activity, are carried out by everybody and everything with great ease. And that the common good and the balance of the system is maintained with everything running smoothly like the gear wheels or different departments of a factory.
Then, we have to ask: who is the “secret handler”, not seen because He is behind the curtain, but his existence is seen by the eye of the mind.
You see, a place which makes one think a lot, amazing mind and appearing beautiful to the eye and to the heart, with all characteristics it has, is far away from being useless and meaningless. Since desiring to know who is the commander of that army, the owner of that guest-house and the author of that grand book called universe and seeking Him and trying to know him is a condition for being a human being with intellect and consciousness, our traveller also wonders a lot about it and looks at the skies which catches his eyes primarily. In order to explain the truth of “Oneness” (Tawheed, monotheism) the work starts with explanation of how the skies, which are the most brilliant pages of oneness, bear witness to the oneness of Allah. In the text of this work, we see expressions which are breaking the frames, routines and of monotonousness:
* “Holding and keeping separate hundreds and thousands of celestial bodies up in the skies without support of any column”. Such expressions should never be considered simple. It speaks of deep and sophisticated realities within this seeming simplicity. You should not be tricked by the explanation of the regular activities which are subject to an order with “laws of nature” as if that unknown truth has been understood and its mystery solved.
Yes, it’s true, some of the activities in the nature appear as a result of some causes. And yes, there are some processes in the nature which become laws. But, the objects do not move just because there are such laws. These laws of nature do not have a physical body. They just help as the functioning of the activities, just like imaginary meridian lines. The laws of nature are an expressions and articulations of the fact that objects move and act orderly, they do not behave randomly and accidentally, that is to say they are run / employed by a will. Just as a judge renders a decision and the decision is applied. And the decision in itself does not have a physical body, and does not have an implementation force on its own. If it weren’t for the judge, it would not be decided at all.
Then, that decision is just a reflection of the Judge’s Will, it is the way of appearance of the things that Judge is willing to get done. The decision is a “judgement”, and there cannot be “the Judge who is judging”.
Just in the same way, the laws of nature, which are fancy names given to the working or the order in the nature, could not and would not explain the essence/nature of the matter. Because as their names suggest, they are just laws, they cannot be The Law-Maker, the Might. Now, we have an action of will and might, whose actor is still unidentified!
When you throw in somewhere tens of balls, none of them would go into an orbit or could escape from hitting each other or can stay up in the air suspended. This should have been the case in the sky as well. And suddenly a perfect order starts functioning and instead of searching for the one who makes it function, this functioning and the rules of that functioning are given fancy names due to their stability/permanence. And, then, we say alright. The secret of this unknown and formidable miraculous event, of this orderly functioning suddenly becomes understandable and becomes ordinary.
Any example? Certainly: The ones which are most well-known: force of gravity, electromagnetic force, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force. These four basic forces, with a magnificent distribution, enable the formation of the material universe. This proportion between forces is based on such a sensitive balance that, it is possible for them to exert the necessary affect over the particles only and only under this ratio. Four names given to these sensitive and balanced functioning and order! Fancy but empty names “which do not answer the questions of why and by whom” and which rather answer the questions of what and how it functions – expressions missing the doer of the activity…
*Burning of the stars without oil and their dispatch without any noise”. Let’s have a look at how our “smart aleck” science explains the incessantly burning of stars in the space without oxygen for billions of years. Let us understand which expressions are (real) representations of truth.
But first of all, in order to create awareness for you, we will draw your attention to the following: The answer given by the science is not more meaningful than those expressions “The sun burns because it burns; a star shines as it is a star”.
Please have a look at these words: “When we go up into the space we see that there is no oxygen. Then, how does this happen? The answer is so easy (?!). The sun produces its own energy. Heat and pressure levels are very high in the sun. We can call it a giant store of hydrogen. It contains hydrogen and helium atoms. The essence of the matter is the reaction of hydrogen and helium atoms. The reaction of these two atoms produces an enormous amount of energy. This energy is heat. Also, as a result of this reaction, stars shine.”
We were so much enlightened and amazed by these expressions, aren’t we?! Did you realize that, it did not tell us anything valuable, more than the activity itself and its functioning? More interestingly, if you look at the expression more carefully, you can see that it presents us such a wonderful event which is worth being amazed each day over and over again in a banalized manner. You see, the atheist science is such an unreal nonsense! Don’t be fooled!
You should know with certainty that it is Quran that teaches us the true essence of the matter. And it says that “He has made the sun a lamp for you…” This is the real wisdom…
* Sun’s and Moon’s existing orders and responsibilities and their useful consequences, show that they are working just like an obedient soldier and we also see that fact.
* Although the distances are so long, the functioning is in the same manner and in the same shape in all parts.
*Although numerous celestial bodies move at a surprising speed, their orbits crossing with each other in a complicated way, while normally a chaos would be expected that to occur, resulting in numerous crashes, irregularities, dirtiness and rubbish, none of these happens and our sky appears immensely clean, orderly and “beautiful”.
All these activities show that: there is an apparent act of management and it appears that way. Under this management, there is great truth coming from charging and employing and looking after by paying attention to the cleanliness in an orderly way.
This truth also shows, to the eye of the mind, the Creator whose existence is more certain and imperative than the existence of the universe which is managed and created to function under his order; and necessitates the existence of the Creator in the most definite way. And, in order to deny (the existence of) the manager, it is necessary to deny the truth of “orderly management” that is to say to deny the existence of the universe itself.
